Titre de la thèse : The Impact of Generative Language AI Models on Development of Critical Thinking Skills

Résumé de la thèse : Critical thinking skills are one of the most difficult skills to develop in education because they are best developed when embedded in the educational process. This requires a lot of work on the part of the teachers to transform their teaching material, which is not usually possible due to the high degree of teacher workload.

This PhD research project proposes to investigate how specially designed AI-powered chatbots, when integrated into the learning process, affect the development of students’ critical thinking skills. The proposed research design will use a mixed-methods design, including both quantitative and qualitative phases. In the quantitative phase an AI-powered chatbot, fine-tuned for pedagogical tasks centered on critical thinking skills, will be introduced for the experimental group. The qualitative phase will involve semi-structured interviews with students to contextualize the quantitative findings and a semantic analysis of student-chatbot interaction transcripts for better understanding on efficient communication patterns. The outcomes of this study have the potential to become translational research, assisting educators to integrate AI-based solutions into their teaching practice and foster students’ critical thinking.
